MARTIN DEL CARPIO

(Venezuela | EUA - U.S.A.)

Martin Del Carpio, born in Venezuela but raised in New York, where he currently lives, Martin Del Carpio is an artist marked by experimentation, the search of new concepts, sounds and melodies, by a fascination with lyrics and the journey that music takes us on.

Following his increasing need to create, he studied music in New York for two years after high school but dropped out after failing to obtain the skills and techniques he craved. He excelled in theater and vocals, aspects that would progressively underlie his creation.

His evolution as an artist is based on what he calls "street knowledge", a hands-on personal experience characterized by uniqueness and a somewhat dark voice that Martin has dedicated his life to finding. His work shows a personal conflict between outside forces that point him towards mainstream creation and the need to express something intimate, to be honest no matter what the cost and regardless of what comes out. He defines himself as an underground music artist more than a musician, as his work relies more on ideas and inspiration than technique.

Among his most important albums we can find In Absentia (2007), in his own words, a "personal political record, abrasive and out there, a ´fuck you' record if you will." It is a melodic expression of psychosis surrounded by a dark ambience that pushes the sounds and accentuates the feeling of letting go.

Pequeño Pionero (2008) is a Latin experimentation album in Spanish, a personal challenge characterized by theatrical singing and the mere expression of a creative process. Vampiros, El Tirano and Hipocresía are songs worth listening to.

Tropic of Capricorn (2009) is an EP that marks his "lowest point as a solo artist", a struggle between the need to make money with music and the imperative to do what his inner voice commands. As a self-financed recording artist with a daytime job, this is something that constantly makes him wonder about music, a struggle that many artists can relate to, where he constantly hits dead ends, gives up and starts over again.

X (2011) is considered an unfinished album, the maximum expression of his lifelong experimentation. It is a "decadent, sexual love record", the obscure expression of his subconscious. It marks the beginning of his career as an experimental visual artist. His music video work has led him to participate in several international festivals since 2016, granting him awards and places as a finalist in more than one.

The album Godard (2013) follows the same experimental lines. Then Martin shifts gears to produce the retrospective Lost Illusions (2014), responding to the need to show the audience his evolution and provide guidance on his work. Some highlights are the songs Piano, Adam and The World Again.

Martin's desire to bend the rules and explore reaches a peak in Notes from the Underground (2015), an abstract, electronic experimental album he recorded completely on his own, unlike his previous work where he always collaborated with a producer. In it, he was able to let go of the sound structure and melodies to just "go with the flow".

In 2018, Martin has released another music project entitled Involution inspired by his mother's passing. It's an album made up mostly of spoken word performances with minimalist experimental electronic sounds with a few songs thrown in for good measure.

Aside from music, Martin has worked on numerous experimental film projects of his own such as The Antiteater of Ten, Mother's Milk, I...dreaming and The Alluring Sway.

In the future, he plans to continue experimenting with sound and visuals, taking us on a journey to places still unexplored.
